Report from Mirosha Somasundram, key volunteer in assisting MTUC to distribute foods for the Bangladeshi workers.
The food distribution volunteers are from all walks of life, including students, full time workers and professionals like dentists and computer scientists and accountants, volunteers at gurdwaras that serve free food for the elderly, a stay at home mother. We even have volunteers from other states helping us virtually with data.
We have another team of volunteers that we formed just this week, and this team works on data sorting, mainly for the addresses and the info of the workers, to ensure a smoother delivery process. This team ensures that the addresses are all sorted according to their respective areas, so each car distributed around one area only, saving time and energy, as well as resources.
Currently we have been having more and more volunteers joining us, around 30 in the distribution team and 12 in the data team and still counting.
Some of them are my friends and some are people who saw my online post on this and approached me. Despite all the risk around them, they have big-heartedly come forth to help these workers out. Hence why we constantly stressed on taking the right safety measures, as we want everyone involved in this noble initiative to stay safe.
Today was the biggest contingent with 30 people and 16 cars and delivery to 354 locations and thus far we have delivered to more than 1000 locations. Thanks to MTUC/Bangladesh Embassy and all the volunteers from all walks of life.
