KUALA LUMPUR: Employers who have yet to register their workers with Socso have until the end of this month to do so or risk getting compounded.

Socso Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said that from September 1 onwards, they would begin Ops Kesan to track and issue compound to errant employers.

“We hope employers will register their workers to ensure their social safety net is taken care of,” he said.

Dr Mohammed Azam said Socso would carry out inspection on employers who failed to register or make contributions throughout the year.

Ops Kesan, he said, was a major crackdown conducted annually.

As of December 31 last year, there were 402,039 active employers with 6.2 million registered workers.

Dr Mohammed Azam said that since Ops Kesan began in 2009, a total of 23,755 compounds had been issued to employers who failed to register with Socso or did not make contributions for their staff.

Errant employers would be slapped with compounds ranging between RM500 and RM4,000.

If prosecuted, an employer could risk getting fined up to RM10,000 or two years’ imprisonment or both.

Dr Mohammed Azam said in last year’s Ops Kesan, 13,368 employers were visited and 10.8% or 1,444 employers were found to have failed to register their business or did not make contributions for their employers.

He said compounds worth about RM1.14mil were issued last year.

Dr Mohammed Azam said that from January to the end of July this year, Socso’s inspection on 5,641 employers revealed that 10.5% or 591 employers had failed to register their business or did not make contributions for their employees.

“Some of them think they do not need to register if they have only one or two workers. But that’s not right.

“Employers must make Socso contributions for every worker, even if they are part time or on contract basis,” he said. – The Star
