Housing is one of the 3 basic needs of life and Malaysian workers with low and medium income are facing a serious crisis in providing a decent home for their families as the house prices are beyond their reach.

For too long governments in the world and in Malaysia have been putting economy and the Developers Company interests at the center of city planning and development instead of the Workers who are also the Citizen’s purchasing power. It is now necessary to focus on people’s basic needs such as where they live so that affordable housing will be placed at the center of city development.

The Malaysian Government has emphasised its concerns through the 2017 Budget and in 11th Malaysia Plan however, the severity of the house prices cannot be resolved in isolation, but with the cooperation of all concerned.

Banks need to provide lowest interest rates for housing loans as opposed to other products, Developers must bid the lowest price for lands while Contractors should find modern ways of constructing homes faster and safer and Employers too need to play their role in subsidising staff housing loan interest, etc.

A Workers Housing Advisory Council for affordable housing needs to be set up at the earliest, comprising of representatives from Developers, Contractors, Workers, Employers, Financial Institutes, House Buyers’ Association and Government Agencies for proper regulation.
