On behalf of the National Executive Council, I wish all those celebrating, a blessed Christmas and happy holidays to all others. This festive season, let us also take stock of the events that transpired in 2016 and the imminent challenges before us from 2017 onwards.
In view of the depreciating Ringgit Malaysia, we face the reality of drastic price increase on controlled items, some of which had already increased in 2016 and the uncertainties of our job security and our livelihood in view of the intensive digitalisation and automation.
The Malaysian Government and Banks suggest that we should be open to empowerment however, we are not given the opportunity instead we see more jobs taken away in various ways. Banks are trying to run the operations with minimal staff strength, as a result we are not given the opportunity for self-development and enhancement through training due to shortage of manpower for operations.
This has to be corrected for the benefit of all stakeholders. The Finance Ministry, Bank Negara Malaysia and Banks will have to make all efforts to engage NUBE in a positive consultation to address this issue which is affecting the livelihood of the bank workers who have contributed immensely to the profits of the Malaysian Banks. We are confident that such consultation will strike a balance for all parties concerned without comprising the profits of the Banks and our job security, when all parties adhere to the principles of the Decent Work Agenda.
At the same time NUBE members should at all times protect their job instead of pawning it for golden handshakes or voluntary separation schemes. We will also need to focus on discipline, commitment and accountability at work and enhancing our skills to be in demand. NUBE members must be the example of a good worker.
As this message reaches you from me, let us put our hearts and soul together for NUBE and welcome the new year, 2017 bestowed upon us by the grace of God.
Season’s Greetings and a Happy New Year.
J SOLOMON
GENERAL SECRETARY
