On 21 March 2018, Ken, a senior staff in HSBC Bank went to collect his medicines at the dispensary after his routine medical check-up. The dispensary staff told Ken that HSBC Bank had instructed them not to supply the medicines which Ken has been taking for the past 23 years.
Ken immediately contacted the Senior Manager, Alan Sunil Netto who assured Ken that he would look into the matter. In spite of sending emails and WhatsApp enquiries, there was no response from Alan.
Realising that not taking the scheduled medicines might endanger his life, Ken bought the medicines with his own money.
Thirty (30) days later, Alan woke up from his slumber and replied that he would revert to Ken in a week’s time. Three days later Alan replied that the matter was being pursued with the clinic and his colleague would revert to Ken.
Then one Shareen Teoh from the HSBC Bank HR Department directed Ken to go for a second medical opinion. Ken complied with this order. In the meantime, Ken continued to remind Alan as he did not revert to him as promised. (We can only conclude that Allan had gone back to continue his sleep!)
Seventy-five (75) days later Shareen Teoh replied saying that only one of the medicines in the original prescription list would be supplied with the condition, this time, that Ken must get a Specialist’s Prescription!
Even after Ken provided HSBC Bank with the Specialist’s Prescription, his troubles did not end there. HSBC Bank told him that the prescription would be reviewed!
To cut a long story short, Ken had to invoked two (2) Grievances before he was given his treatment and medication. Ken’s grievance still remains unresolved because HSBC Bank is attempting to deny him and other NUBE members access to medical treatment as provided for in the Collective Agreement.
The heartless and inhumane treatment suffered by Ken is the manifestation of the arrogance of the bank especially its unproductive and underperforming HR Management.
These are the modern – day plunderers led by one Calister Koh and a British CEO Stuart Milne who are bending backwards to deny the medical benefits of their employee which is in breach of the Collective Agreement
